How Commercial Waste Management Works
Commercial waste management starts with what your building throws away. Since 31 March 2025, businesses in England with ten or more employees must keep food waste and dry recyclables - glass, metal, plastic, paper and card - apart from general waste.
Smaller businesses have until 31 March 2027. That makes waste segregation a daily job: the right bins in kitchens, offices and back-of-house areas, clear labels, and cleaners who empty each stream into the right container. Collections are booked with our specialist waste partners for each stream, at times that suit the building and the council's rules on putting waste out. Under the duty of care, every transfer of waste needs a waste transfer note, and you must be able to show where your waste went. We keep those records together, so they are ready when a landlord, auditor or council officer asks for them.
Commercial Waste Management Services
01
A Waste Plan for Your Building
We start with what your building produces, and where: food waste from the kitchen, paper from the office floors, cardboard from deliveries, glass from a bar.
From that we set the number and size of bins, where they stand, and how often each stream is collected. Items that must not go in general waste, such as batteries, fluorescent tubes and old electrical equipment, are kept apart and collected separately.

02
Waste Segregation and Recycling
Recycling only works if the streams stay clean. One bag of food waste in the cardboard can spoil the whole container. The fixes are simple and daily: clear labels, the right bin in the right place, and cleaners who know what goes where.
When a stream keeps getting contaminated, we tell you where it is happening and change the labels or the bin positions.

03
Confidential Waste Collection
Documents with personal or commercial information need secure destruction, not the paper bin. Locked consoles go in the office, and our specialist partners collect and shred the contents and issue a certificate of destruction for your records.
BS EN 15713 is the industry standard for the secure destruction of confidential material, so it is worth asking any provider which service level your documents need.

04
Scheduled and One-Off Collections
Most streams are collected on a fixed schedule. Some waste is not regular: a stock clear-out, an office move, furniture after a refit, or extra glass after an event.
We arrange one-off collections for those through the same partners, so the extra waste is documented like the rest. Your named account manager is the contact for both, so you are not ringing round waste companies when a skip is needed.

Commercial Waste Management FAQs
Common Questions About Commercial Waste Management
Do you collect the waste yourselves?
No. Collections are made by specialist waste partners who are licensed waste carriers, and Bayleaf manages the service around them. In a London workplace, retail unit or restaurant, that means one contact for the bins, the collection schedule and the paperwork. Bayleaf's environmental management is certified to ISO 14001. At sites Bayleaf cleans, the cleaners bag the waste and put it out for collection as part of the routine, but they do not collect or process it.
Which waste streams can you manage?
Bayleaf arranges collections for general waste, mixed dry recycling, paper and card, glass and food waste. Confidential paper, batteries, lamps and electrical equipment are kept apart and collected separately, and grease from kitchen grease traps is covered too. Bulky one-off waste, such as old furniture after a refit, is arranged when needed. A restaurant, an office floor and a bar produce different mixes, so streams, bin sizes and collection frequencies differ from site to site.

What are the workplace recycling rules?
Since 31 March 2025, businesses in England with ten or more employees must keep food waste and dry recyclables, such as glass, metal, plastic, paper and card, apart from general waste. Smaller businesses have until 31 March 2027. In a London building that means separate bins in kitchens, offices and back-of-house areas, clear labels and a collection for each stream. Bayleaf sets up the bins and collections to match, through its specialist waste partners.
What paperwork do I need for commercial waste?
Ordinary waste needs a waste transfer note for each transfer, kept for at least two years. Hazardous waste needs a consignment note, kept for three. Under the duty of care, a business must be able to show its waste went to a licensed carrier, which is what landlords, auditors and council officers ask to see. Bayleaf keeps clients' waste transfer notes on file, using the records its waste partners supply.

Who keeps the waste separated day to day?
In a building that Bayleaf cleans, the cleaners empty each bin into the right container for its stream and put the bags and bins out for collection. In one it does not clean, Bayleaf briefs the client's own team and labels the bins so the system is clear. A kitchen, an office floor and a stockroom each need different bin positions, so the labels and locations are set after looking at how the building is used.
How is a waste management quote put together?
For clients with a Bayleaf cleaning contract, a quote starts with a short survey of what the building produces. Bayleaf works out the streams, bin sizes and collection frequencies, then prices the regular collections and any one-off work such as a stock clear-out or an office move. If volumes change later, the schedule and the price are adjusted. The same survey is what the building's waste plan is drawn from.
Can I book waste management without a cleaning contract?
No. Commercial waste management is offered only to sites that already have a main cleaning contract, because the cleaning teams and the account manager run it alongside the daily routine. It is not available as a stand-alone service, or to ad hoc clients. Where a site has no Bayleaf cleaning contract yet, the first step is a quote for cleaning, after which your account manager can arrange the collections and records through our partner.
